Clarkstown is one of more than 1,100 cities and towns across the U.S. that have asked Google to speed up their Internet connections as part of the company's "Google Fiber" project. The search-engine giant says it will build the infrastructure for affordable, ultra-high-speed Internet connections in one or more communities, with the hopes of serving 50,000 to 500,000 people. Google plans to choose the winning community or communities by the end of the year.
In Clarkstown, we submitted a thorough application last week and in part of that process they ask that we show strong community support. Hence this blog. Please post in the comments section reasons why it will be beneficial for the Town of Clarkstown to have ultra-high-speed Internet connections (Google states that it could be up to 100 times faster then what many clarkstown residents and businesses have access to today.)
The craze has started - I happened to spot this as I was hanging out in my neighborhood - obviously Google has nothing better to do than scan driveways for messages using their Google Earth satellites

Clarkstown needs Google's Broadband Initiative because it will provide better internet access, allow for existing & new businesses to thrive, and it will lead to innovative services that will benefit our community.
ReplyDeleteThe incumbent internet access providers deliver limited service at excessive rates, and they have demonstrated that they can't be trusted to provide unrestricted access -- they want to limit the type of traffic and the throughput available to you. This stifles innovation, creativity and the development of new and exciting services.
The internet has limitless potential, but only if the underlying foundation (open access and sufficient bandwidth) are provided to all players.
Clarkstown, with its close proximity to NYC and its excellent quality of life, could attract many progressive small businesses and major corporate entities, and could have a much more interactive and open local government, but has already missed out on these opportunities because of the lack of infrastructure. Google's Broadband Initiative can help residents, government and businesses obtain the full benefit that the internet has to offer.
Clarkstown is right in the middle of NYC and Albany. By bringing super high speed internet to Clarkstown, we can re-open the link between the two aforementioned cities, not only benefiting Clarkstown, but New York State commerce as a whole.
ReplyDeleteIt is very clear that the Internet is now an essential part of my children's education, whether it's dictated by the schools or not. I am very interested in seeing how ultra-broadband access will offer new sources of information to my kids.
ReplyDeleteI work at NYU and need to connect remotely often. The Google broaband initiative would make this more convenient as a very fast link is essential for the graphical applications I use.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Is a company that is on the cutting edge of technology. Access to the internet has become part of many businesses. As a user of the internet I feel that the current companies available in Clarkstown can do better. Bringing in a company like Google will be beneficial to making the internet search faster. I am in support of Google coming to Clarkstown.
